Episode #13: Becoming a Clinical Strength Coach: 5 Things That Hold People Back & How To Overcome Them

Becoming a Clinical Strength Coach: 5 Things That Hold People Back & How To Overcome Them

If you’re here, you’re likely a barbell athlete who is interested in becoming a coach or a physical therapist or chiropractor interested in taking a more progressive approach to rehab but something is holding you back.

In today’s episode we discuss and provide strategies for the five most common things that hold people back from pursuing a career as a barbell coach or clinical barbell rehab coach.

1 - Mindset & imposter syndrome

2 - Putting yourself out there

3 - Where to get your first client

4 - Feeling prepared to accept clients

5 - Discerning what information or certifications are right for you

Dr. Rori Alter, PT, PRSCC, SSC: [00:00:28] in today's episode, we're going to be following up on the last couple of episodes that we've done on the challenges of starting your coaching or clinical career. We've shared our story. We've spoken with Dr. John Petrizzo, Clinical Coach here at Progressive Rehab & Strength, physical therapist, and professor in the exercise science field. We've spoken to him about challenges with certifications and seminars. The process of mentorship, going from schooling to your career and continuing to build that career as Clinical Coaches, and where we are at the point in our careers. Alyssa and I have spent the last couple of years working with new coaches, people who want to be coaches, newer clinicians, and student clinicians entering the field of physical therapy and chiropractic. The people who want to bust through that mill model physical therapy or rehabilitation practice and integrate barbell training and coaching into the rehab setting. And coaches or athletes who want to move into a coaching career, helping people with barbells, and mentoring new up-and-coming coaches and clinicians. We faced these challenges in our careers as well.

Dr. Rori Alter, PT, PRSCC, SSC: [00:02:11] We've noticed five things that tend to hold people back from taking that leap of faith, putting trust in themselves, and taking the risk of moving forward towards the career or lifestyle career that they want to have. So these five things that hold people back are what we're going to talk about in today's episode. So the five challenges that hold people back that we've identified are mindset and imposter syndrome challenges putting themselves out there through content creation and building authority in the content creation world. So we'll talk about what that means and the challenge of getting that first client. So some people are like, I'll never be a coach. I don't have any clients, and I can't leave the mill-model physical therapy practice because I don't have any clients outside where I work. So where am I going to get them? So getting your first client tends to hold people back. So, where and how to get that client and even start? Do I charge, or do I do it for free? All those types of things. And then, being prepared to accept clients, I don't have an intake system. I don't have liability forms or waivers to fill out. I don't have insurance. So how do I accept my first client? That kind of thing. And then also discerning what information or certifications are right for you depending on the path that you want to take.
